What is a prosthetic joint infection (PJI)?

What is PJI?

PJI happens when cells and bacteria stick together on a joint such as a prosthetic knee, forming a substance called biofilm. Biofilm can act as a protective shield for harmful bacteria, allowing infection to grow and spread around your prosthetic knee, sometimes even when you are on an antibiotic.

The study medication being tested targets the bacterial biofilm and may be able to kill the harmful bacteria living on the prosthetic joint.
